Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday: Impostors by Scott Westerfeld

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.  In this prompt we discuss books that have yet to be published that we’re excited about! Head over to her blog to learn more.

I personally stole this idea from Elizabeth @ the Bookish Connoisseur, so thanks girl.

I know I haven’t been around a terribly long time in the book blogger world, but if you don’t know how much I love the Uglies series at this point…

Me, 24/7, whenever I think about how much I love the Uglies series.

Okay, so, other than Harry Potter™, which is the pinnacle of all things I love, I want to say that the Uglies trilogy is reeeeeally what started it all. I mean, I love Harry Potter, and I certainly loved reading at the same time, but I also loved Harry Potter outside of reading? If that makes sense? I lived for the movies, the merch, the characters, the actors, EVERYTHING. I loved reading the books most of all, but there was also SO MUCH MORE about it that I loved. So I don’t reeeeally classify Harry Potter as the start of my love of reading. That kind of already existed. And up until probably middle school?? I think?? I mostly read book series like The Babysitter’s Club (Mary-Anne Spier 4 lyfe) or the Mandie series or The Boxcar Children or Dear Canada. All excellent book series, but I never searched out for anything. Until I went to summer camp.

A Play, by Yours Truly

Act 1

Scene 1

The year is 2007. Two nerdy girls [ERIN and ALEX] are at a church summer camp, despite neither of them being particularly involved with church. They meet a new girl, ANNELISE, who is impossibly cool and always wears baggy sweaters.

If you like to read, you should read the Uglies series. It’s about different parts of society where you get an operation to turn pretty when you’re sixteen. Up until then you’re known as an Ugly, but when you get the operation you become a Pretty. There’s also some cops that are called Specials, who try to track down those who have run away, called Smokies.

[ERIN and ALEX nod in amazement.]

The Smokies are the best, but Specials are cool too. Pretties are cool because you’re pretty.

[ERIN and ALEX pretend they live in this Pretty Universe for the rest of the week at summer camp.]

End of play.

That’s basically how it went. Anyway, I became properly obsessed and immediately ordered the whole trilogy from the Scholastic book order. And then I read and reread them a thousand times. I didn’t know what dystopian was at the time, but I absolutely loved it. David is probably my first every book boyfriend, if I were to be honest.

Other things in my life that have been Uglies series related:

  • My personal username for everything non-book blog related is either erinla or erin-la, based upon the nicknames that the Uglies characters give each other.
  • I started to call my friend Alex Ally instead because Ally-wa rolls off the tongue much easier than Alex-wa.
  • A signed copy of Uglies became my first ever internet purchase, and it was all downhill from there.
  • It also was my first ever book signed by an author and it will go with me to my grave.
  • I once tweeted Scott Westerfeld on Twitter back in 2011, and he replied back to me about how much my mother loves me. I haven’t changed my username since to respect this ultra-important moment in my life.

I had really given up on any more books in the Uglies world. AND THEN LO AND BEHOLD…

(There will also be a sixth and seventh and eighth book, but one book at a time, people.)

I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a book?? Ever??? I mean sure, Harry Potter™, but I KNEW those books were coming out. I anticipated them. Impostors took me completely by surprise!

Synopsis: Frey and Rafi are inseparable . . . but very few people have ever seen them together. This is because Frey is Rafi’s double, raised in the shadow’s of their rich father’s fortress. While Rafi has been taught to charm, Frey has been taught to kill. Frey only exists to protect her sister. There is no other part of her life. Frey has never been out in the world on her own – until her father sends her in Rafi’s place to act as collateral for a dangerous deal. Everyone thinks she’s her sister – but Col, the son of a rival leader, is starting to get close enough to tell the difference. As the stakes grow higher and higher, Frey must decide whether she can trust him – or anyone in her life.

Here’s a link to Scott’s FAQ about the new books. But for your pleasure (and mine), these are my favourite:

Also lots of other cool new tech, never seen before in the Uglies universe.

Why isn’t it call Cakes?

It’s true. “Pretty” is the last word in Uglies, “special” is the last word in Pretties, “ugly” is the last word in Specials, and “cake” is the last word in Extras. So it should be called Cakes.

But the cake is a lie.

Why do you keep spelling it “Impostors” instead of “Imposters”?

Because an “imposter” is someone who works in an impost office. DO YOU WANT TO READ YA BOOKS ABOUT CUSTOMS OFFICIALS? (If you do, there’s probably fan fic.)

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for a book.

(Except for Harry Potter™.)

Here’s my Uglies series review if you feel so inclined!
